Resources in JAX for Sailors, Cruisers, Liveaboards

Some of you may know about these places.  We didn't but learned about them from other cruisers.  I thought I would post the info to pay it forward to so speak.

St Augustine store front
Sailors Exchange is in St Augustine but they have opened a store in Jacksonville, near Ortega Landing.  It was the old Pier 17 for those of you that knew that place.  Sailors Exchange is a consignment shop much like Sailorman in Ft Lauderdale or Bacon Sails in Annapolis.  We have found some good deals in here.

Just around the corner from Sailors Exchange in Jacksonville is Chamberlin Bookmine.  It's a HUGE used book store.  HUGE!  I include this as a boaters resource because they have one of the largest selections of books on sailing, boating, boat building, old cruising guides, cruising stories, sea tales, glossy yacht picture books, etc....the most I have ever seen in one store.  They had over 500 books on the Caribbean.  Tom bought a book about the general history of the Caribbean.

If you go, pack a lunch or eat ahead of time!

  1. When buying from one of these places, it's a good idea to check for drug residue/clean the item thoroughly. We know of a case of a sailor busted in California after buying an item at an exchange that was contaminated. He was able to prove his innocence, but it took a year to clear his record.

We have also recommended having the police check any used car with a drug dog no matter where it is bought.
